– Bio-Tech Consulting to Remove Nonnative, Nuisance Plants from Bower Tract in Hillsborough County –

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bio-Tech Consulting Inc., a full-service environmental consulting firm headquartered in Orlando and serving clients throughout Florida and the Southeastern United States, today announced that it won a contract from the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD) for the “Bower Tract Non-Native and Nuisance Plant Control and Removal Project.” The Bower Tract is located in Hillsborough County, Fla. on the shores of northeastern Old Tampa Bay and includes portions of Channel A and Rocky Creek.

The project requires Bio-Tech Consulting to remove nonnative and nuisance plant species from approximately 321 acres of the Bower Tract’s total 1585 acres. The initial plant control and removal work must be completed within 180 days of the project start, and Bio-Tech Consulting will conduct on-going site maintenance and nonnative and nuisance plant control for an additional three years.

Nonnative and nuisance plants targeted by this project include Earpod tree, Brazilian pepper, lead tree, rosary pea, hairy indigo, Guinea grass, Australian pine, air potato, and more. The project also requires Bio-Tech Consulting to mow, clear and maintain approximately six miles of fire lanes throughout the tract.

“For Bio-Tech, our Tampa team members will be leading this project with help from our crew here in Orlando,” said John Miklos, president of Bio-Tech Consulting. “The Bower Tract is a valuable asset to the Tampa Bay region, and removing these nuisance plant species will help ensure success for the tract’s wetland and upland areas – and ultimately will help improve coastal habitats throughout Old Tampa Bay.”

The tract is a diverse estuarine ecosystem of mangroves, salt marshes, tidal flats, oyster bars, creeks and bayous.
