Webster Creek Mitigation Bank Selects Bio-Tech Consulting to Assist With Area Restoration Enhancement Project

ORLANDO, Fla. – Bio-Tech Consulting Inc., a full-service environmental consulting firm headquartered in Orlando, Fla. and serving clients throughout Florida and the Southeastern United States, today announced that it is consulting on a new mitigation bank project, called the Webster Creek Mitigation Bank, in Volusia County, Fla. that aims to restore the area’s historic system for the benefit of the regional environment. This historic system was degraded in the 1950s when ditches were dug through salt marshes and sensitive mangrove environments for the purpose of mosquito control.

Early steps of the restoration process involve Bio-Tech Consulting filing an Environmental Resource Permit application with the St. Johns River Water Management District and a Prospectus with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Future phases of the environmental enhancement effort may include filling archaic mosquito ditches and replanting of native flora.

“This important historic system was severely degraded by ditching in the 1950s, which was done for mosquito control reasons,” said John Miklos, president of Bio-Tech Consulting. “The ditching process reduced the overall natural functions provided by these wetlands and negatively impacted important fisheries components, water quality and many other functions. This restoration project will improve the area’s functionality and greatly benefit the regional environment of Webster Creek as a whole.”

For this project, Bio-Tech Consulting proposes to move dirt needed to fill the mosquito ditches with a process called hydroblasting – a more environmentally-sensitive technique than the use of heavy earth-moving machines such as bulldozers. A phased approached to the Webster Creek Mitigation Bank restoration project means a majority of the historic system’s functionality can be anticipated to return within four or five years following restoration and enhancement.
